For Australian Expats abroad

Already abroad.
Still tied to the Australian tax system.

When you left Australia, the ATO didn't leave you. We are the firm Australians abroad call when the rules turn out to be more complicated than the move was - and when the wrong answer is genuinely expensive.

§ 01

Who this is for.

You earn overseas. You may still own Australian property, hold Australian super, hold Australian shares, or have an Australian portfolio you'd rather not unwind. Maybe a family back home. Maybe a HECS debt that didn't dissolve at the airport. You are tax-resident somewhere - perhaps Australia, perhaps the host country, perhaps both. The honest answer is rarely obvious without looking at your facts.

§ 02

The problems we see, again and again.

01

Residency is contested, not declared

Australia's residency rules are subjective. We look at intent, domicile, continuity of abode and the 183-day test against the full picture of your life - and provide a written, defensible position before you file.

02

Australian-sourced income still triggers obligations

Rent, interest, franked dividends, capital gains on Australian property - all generally lodgeable, even with no salary back home. Often a non-lodgement advice is the answer; sometimes a full return.

03

CGT event I1, six-year rule, main residence

Mishandled, these cost tens of thousands. Done in the right order, with the right elections, much of that cost is avoided.

04

Superannuation as a non-resident

Contribution rules, transfer balance caps, SMSF residency, divorce of Australian and offshore super, drawdowns from foreign retirement schemes.

05

Foreign income and double taxation

Foreign Income Tax Offset (FITO), treaty positions, the interaction between Australian and host-country tax. Quietly the difference of thousands per year.

06

ESS - the trap most global employees miss

RSUs, options and ESS taxation across residency changes is where global employees lose the most money and don't even know it.

§ 03

How we help.

01 / 06

Residency determinations

A written, defensible position for your facts and circumstances.

02 / 06

For non-residents and part-year taxpayers. Foreign income, FITO, CGT, every associated schedule.

03 / 06

04 / 06

Superannuation strategy

Whilst non-resident, including foreign pension interaction.

05 / 06

ESS advisory

Cross-border vesting, double taxation, cost-base resets, when to vest, when to sell.

06 / 06

ATO representation

Objections, audits, residency reviews, private binding rulings - 90%+ success rate.

When I moved to Dubai, three accountants told me I was fine. One year later the ATO disagreed. Expat Taxes sorted it - and have handled every return since.
